DeKalb-Cherokee Counties Gas District was formed in 1954 by the cities of Fort Payne, Collinsville and Centre, Alabama. The district, located in Northeast Alabama, is governed by a nine-member board of directors appointed from the member cities:
Dekalb-Cherokee Gas offers some 6500 customers in DeKalb, Cherokee and Etowah counties the most economical and reliable energy value available. With safe, clean-burning natural gas our customers, both residential and industrial, enjoy this area's best energy value. But the commitment to our customers doesn't end with just that.
DeKalb-Cherokee Gas' customers are offered further possibilities for savings and convenience. Two of our highly successful programs offer residential customers a free water heater and low-interest loans to purchase natural gas appliances and central heating and cooling systems.
During the past five years about 40% percent of our residential customers (about 2000) have taken advantage of DC Gas' free water heaters. Natural gas water heaters heat water about three times faster than an electric unit and operate for about half the cost. So, there is always plenty of hot water at the lowest possible price.
Loans through DeKalb-Cherokee Gas are available for the purchase of natural gas appliances like gas ranges, gas dryers, gas grills, gas logs and fireplace units, gas lights, gas space and zone heaters, and gas furnaces. We'll even finance a central heating and cooling unit (gas heat/electric air conditioning). Now you can have the gas appliances of your choice and pay back the loan on your monthly gas bill.
To open a new or additional account come by our office at 205 Grand Avenue, North in Fort Payne or 1399 West Main Street in Centre. A customer representative will help you complete an application and explain our services and billing procedures to you. You will be required to pay a $25 meter deposit for a new service, a $75 meter deposit for an existing service and $150 for a mobile home or rental unit.
DeKalb-Cherokee Gas will run at no charge a service line up to 500 feet and install a meter next to your house . Homeowners pay a $25 meter deposit. Mobile home owners and renters pay a $150 meter deposit. You are then responsible for the cost of installing the gas appliances in your home.
As a DeKalb-Cherokee Gas customer you enjoy the most efficient and economical means to heat your home, cook your food, dry your clothes and produce hot water for washing and bathing. When you compare BTU's (the units used to measure energy), the advantages of natural gas over other common household fuels are apparent. Natural gas costs you about one-third less than LP (Propane) gas and two-thirds less per million BTU's than electricity.
Once you become a Dekalb-Cherokee Gas customer advantages like financing of your natural gas appliances and a heating and cooling system becomes available. Plus a free 40-gallon natural gas water heater is available to all new and existing customers. DeKalb-Cherokee Gas also offers Simple Budget Payment plan that allows you to pay one low monthly bill for the entire year. Customers having a new service extended to their home qualify for rebates of up to $300.
Many natural gas appliances like space room heaters, gas logs, stoves and water heaters work for you even during electric power outages. Gas is a cozy consolation to a rough winter storm because even during extreme conditions your home can stay warm, safe and secure. And natural gas is plentiful. Most of the gas used in the United States is domestically produced.
In year after year of use in over 40 million American homes natural gas has a superior safety record over all other forms of energy. There are far fewer accidents involving natural gas equipment than any other alternative. The reason natural gas is safe is that a leak can be readily detected. It can be smelled.
Natural gas has no odor, but we add a chemical with a distinctive odor to it to make it easy to detect. If you smell this odor, check first to see if a pilot light has gone out on one of your appliances. If you continue to smell gas, here's what to do:
